Helen H. Bennett Scholarship

Scholarship History
Helen H. Bennett was Supervisor of School Libraries in the Delaware Department of Public Instruction. According to Delaware Libraries: “Mrs. Bennett was dedicated to the development and advancement of school library services and school librarians. She established a scholarship endowment and left her estate to the Delaware Library Association to support the training of professional school librarians.”

The Helen H. Bennett Scholarship was originated in 1970 by the Delaware Library Association “…for the registration and/or tuition to a person working for library certification or a Master’s Degree in Library Science. This person will agree to work in a school-oriented library in Delaware.”

Amount
$1200

Eligibility
A student working for library certification or an ALAaccredited Master’s Degree in Library Science. The successful recipient agrees to work in a school-oriented library in Delaware.

Application Requirements

  • Completed application form — Scholarship Application Form
  • Final transcript from institution awarding baccalaureate degree.
  • Proof of acceptance into an ALA-accredited graduate program.
  • Transcript of graduate courses already completed (if applicable)
  • Applicant’s Affirmation of Intention to Work in a School-Oriented Library in Delaware
  • Narrative statement of 500 words or fewer, including:
    • Specific documentation citing active participation in professional library organizations, library school activities, volunteer and work experiences, and any other related activities.
    • Personal philosophy of librarianship.
    • Personal future goals in the field of librarianship.
