Assistant Director

Job Summary
Assistant Director performs a variety of high-level professional/paraprofessional librarian duties, provides direct/indirect service to library patrons and supervises circulation staff. Work is subject to administrative review by the Director. Must be willing to work evenings, holidays and Saturdays as the library schedule requires.
Qualifications
Degree from accredited college or university with an emphasis on library science; experience in a public library; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and experience for position. Working knowledge of internet searches/navigation, Microsoft Office Products (Word, Excel, Outlook), desktop design programs such as Canva and basic computer troubleshooting skills. Experience with social media. Working knowledge of marketing platform such as Constant Contact is preferred.
Essential Functions
Customer service – Assist a highly diverse group of library patrons find books, sign up for programs and library cards, fax documents and answer computer questions. Candidate will become knowledgeable of children’s, teen and adult programs to assist both patrons and staff. Must have working knowledge of the library system.
Collection Development – Knowledge of collection growth and collection weeding. Ability to assist staff with their program collection. The Assistant Director is required to stay current with the library community and changing library practices.
Planning – Ability to plan, organize, direct, and administer library activities and special events. Assist staff with program planning, often months ahead of time.
Programming – Have knowledge of program management from start to finish including marketing, purchasing materials and running programs. By creating materials and using social media, assist Program Coordinators to publicize programs. Create library displays to engage patrons, publicize library events and encourage exploration of library collection. Stay current with library trends and community needs.
Staff supervision and Development – Hire, train, supervise and mentor circulation staff. Create monthly staffing schedule. Assist Director with hiring of other staff.
Facilities Management – Assist staff, Facilities Coordinator and Director to keep library clean and welcoming. Monitor all areas of the library. Report to State IT departments of any computer/equipment breakdowns.
Professional Development – Delaware Libraries encourage training and ongoing education to stay abreast of changing rules, needs, and concerns in the library community. Training, classes, and workshops are offered monthly to allow staff to grow and succeeded in the positions. Must be willing to learn and, in turn, teach staff.
