Wrap Up: Delaware Library Legislative Day 2015

Thanks to our Delaware Library supporters, Friends, Trustees, Staff, Administrators, Legislators and their Staff for a memorable and wonderful legislative day!  Here is a wrap up:

Attendance:  60+John M., Hillary W. and audience Legislative Day 2015

Light breakfast and Legislative Day Lunch (in Legislative Hall) were provided courtesy of Delaware Library Association. Catering by Calypso Caterers.

DLA Legislative Action Committee:  Kevin Swed, Kay Bowes, Sara Zimmerman, Cathay Keough with special thanks for helpful preparation and on-site participation from Beth-Ann Ryan, Sonja Brown and Jane Tupin.  Thank you to the Dover Public Library for hosting our event!

Morning sessions:   Included visits and inspiration from Secretary of State Jeffrey Bullock and Senator Bryan Townsend, with tips for advocacy from UD Lobbyist Angela Anderson (see her presentation attached here) and the descriptions of our library initiatives given by Margie Cyr, Diana Brown, Hilary Welliver, Sandra Millard, and Annie Norman.  Secretary of State Bullock read and gave the Delaware Library Legislative Day Proclamation, as signed by Governor Markell.

We then picked up our packets and headed to Legislative Hall.

Noon:  Lunch in Legislative Hall.  We mingled with visiting legislative aides, staff, some Representatives and Senators, and each other!

Afternoon meetings:  From our wrap-up at the end of the day, reports that meetings generally went well!  Some even said that this year it seemed like some of the legislators were more informed, asking specific questions, and engaging.

2-3pm: First the Senate and then the House – The Resolution to recognize Delaware Libraries and National Library Week (April 12-18 2015) was unanimously passed!  Senate sponsorship was led by Senator Bryan Townsend.  House sponsorship was shared by a few of our library champions and introduced by Representative Ed Osienski.

We headed back to the Dover Public Library for our wrap up of the day to look at what went well and what we can do better for next year.  Thank you to those who came to that – we have lots of good ideas!
